A Good Life Remembered

It's a very sad time for us right now. Bill's brother Tom passed away yesterday after a brief but valiant struggle with brain cancer. Our hearts and prayers are with the rest of the family, who are dealing with all the things to be done (and there are many) and coping with their grief at the same time.

Tom was blessed with a wonderful life and was the undisputed patriarch of the Loucas Clan. He was wise, funny, caring, a successful businessman, and a loving husband and father; the list goes on and on... But most importantly, he was a believer! So while our hearts are breaking and missing him already, we take comfort from knowing that we WILL meet again in a perfect heavenly place with perfect bodies and in perfect peace for all eternity. God bless you, Tom!

They Paved Paradise (I wish...)

Next time those potholes on your street get you down, think for a moment about us and thank your lucky stars!  This post is about streets and how they get fixed.

Ok, so we wake up this morning, and it's been raining almost twenty-four hours.  Not too hard, just a steady light rain.  A bit windy, but nothing even remotely feeling like the hurricane-force of the previous night.  Our morning routine is to go downstairs, empty the rain gauge, make coffee, then up to the balcony to contemplate the ocean and the day. Looking at the gauge, it's less than 2 inches; not too bad.  Child's play!  Just a shower!

After coffee, Bill dresses for work and heads next door.  They guys have agreed beforehand that the road has a few bad spots and they're going to load a truck with roadbed material and do some repairs.  But wow, when we walk down, the road is an angry red.  Costa Rica's unstoppable red clay has surfaced through the roadbed with a vengeance.  So here are some pictures of the guys repairing the road.  The work party consists of Bill, Tim (our neighbor, see Mareasvillas.com) our yard/pool worker, and Tim's yard worker.

Bill looks hard at work, doesn't he? Hmmmm, but the second picture may be a bit more telling...  There he is, the new guy giving the experienced old hand advice on how to fix a dirt road and supervising the handiwork!  That's my Billy Boy...

All kidding aside (and I AM kidding), they all worked super hard.  Started at 8:30 this morning and they just wrapped up for the day at 12:30 pm.
